In cases where a roof has a complex shape such as in the image to the right measuring the dimensions and areas of each part of the roof to calculate total area will result in a more accurate measurement of area. You can use the roofing calculator below to get a rough estimate of roofing costs per square foot depending on the type of roofing material. If your roof is flat or has no more than a 3 in 12 pitch you can calculate its total square footage by simply multiplying the length by the width. Assuming this is a hip roof we multiply this by 1 1 which gives us roughly 18 squares or 1 800 square feet of the roof surface.

To find the squares divide the overall roof area by 100 and then round up. Now assuming an average pitch of 9 12 we multiply the 2d area of 1 300 by 1 25. This gives us a 3d roof area of 1 625 sq ft. For instance say the numbers used in the over 9 12 above might be sufficient for a particular roof but for a cut up roof 2 stories to the eave with bad access these numbers would be way too low.

Keep in mind that the average size of a roof is 1 700 square feet so your total will likely be 10 higher or lower than this figure. The first step in a free roofing estimate is measuring the roof dimensions. The calculator cannot account for complex shapes based on a measurement of square footage alone. A square simply refers to a 10 x 10 square of roofing.
